A Tragic End

From Ngaire’s journal, 15th October, 1953
This afternoon the prizes were presented at Harewood to the winners of the Air Race, after which some aeroplanes from Wigram flew in formation over the grounds. On their way home, two of the planes collided and crashed, killing seven young men, one of whom, Bill Ziesler*, was a member of Durham St Church. He leaves a widow and three little boys, all under six years of age.”

*Flight Lieutenant Erling William Ziesler. Also killed were Squadron Leader Sholto Duncan, Flight Lieutenant Edwin Ebbett, AC1 Brian Keogh, AC1 Eric Melrose, AC1 William Sharman and AC2 Russell Woodcock.

    • So pleased to hear from you Matthew. Whenever I write about other individuals I wonder if they or their family will read it. Such a tragic event. I hope your grandmother went on to have a happy life.
